When the Roundway Hospital site became redundant, its northern part was in danger of being redeveloped in a typical car dominated suburban style. The District Council were keen to see instead a mixed-use development, ‘Urban Villages’ style, in sympathy with the conserved southern part of the hospital.
We were invited to advise them on the essential principles of Urban Village type development, and on a comprehensive development brief, including illustrative designs for the site including certain buildings the Council sought to retain. The designs included included a range of housing types and tenures, community buildings and open space provision. The layout and communal spaces encouraged walking and cycling and a sense of identity and place
The designs were produced as supporting material to the public inquiry and adopted as setting sustainable urban design principles.
