Sustainable Development

Lichfield Planning played a lead role in the preparation of the Niger Delta Regional Development Master Plan (NDRDMP) - a plan for the sustainable development of a region which is a major producer of oil, the seventh largest in the world, but has 70% of its population living at or below the poverty line.

As part of a consortium that included Harcourt Adukeh Associates and Capita Norman – Dawbarn, Lichfield Planning was commissioned by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) to assist in the production of a spatial master plan based on a wide range of research by local and international consultants.

The main focus of our work was on the examination of scenario options and the preparation of a regional strategy based on a preferred development scenario.  This involved close working with public and private sector bodies and other stakeholders and the facilitation of workshops designed to involve all key stakeholders in the identification and choice of the preferred strategy for the Niger Delta including investment priorities, strategic projects and necessary institutional and legislative reforms.

In addition to the NDRDMP, Lichfield Planning and its partners in the consortium have prepared Implementation Guidelines to provide a detailed framework for the implementation of programmes and projects in the Region over the next 5 years.

Our work with the NDDC is ongoing and we continue to advise the Commission on strategic planning, policy development, the implementation of projects and capacity.
