Waterside (formally known as Prospect Park), the new British Airways business complex is set on a 280 acre site surrounded by parkland, with two aims:  to enable British Airways to operate efficiently in conjunction with Heathrow Airport and to create a new public parkland benefiting the local community.

British Airways were seeking a new landmark building of the highest quality, bringing together corporate functions currently spread out in different buildings around Heathrow. A key criterion was that the building should reflect British Airways' corporate culture as a global, yet caring company, pioneering change in working methods.

The scheme has succeeded in transforming the area into one of the largest public park and nature reserve in the London. Heathlands, wooded areas, a nature reserve, bridle paths, a playground and informal access to meadows have all been created. A particular local attraction is the Community Learning Centre in the heart of the park, sponsored by BA and extending a wide range of educational activities to school children and neighbours. The new office building is located within this area, surrounded by grass mounds, which prevent the building from dominating the landscape.

Dalia Lichfield was commissioned by British Airways to assist the research on their workplace environment, the preparation of a design brief and selection of architects. Once the architect and landscape consultants were selected, Dalia Lichfield provided the Planning advice and support to the project, including  planning risk assessment, public consultation and Planning Statement to the public inquiry. Her evidence to the Inquiry included an Integrated Planning and Environmental Assessment comparing the distribution of impacts on all stakeholders under  two scenarios - one assumes refusal, leaving the landfill site as it is,  and the other assumes approval of  the proposed development, reclamation and landscaping. The method used won an RTPI award for planning achievement. The site is now developed and operational, fulfilling all its original aims.
