Obituary

A Proud Legacy – an Ambitious Future

Why Lichfield Planning? Simple really: it’s our “family” name – and we’re proud of it and all it stands for in the world of Planning.

Professor Nathaniel Lichfield, one of our two founding partners, was one of the leading and most innovative Planners involved in the massive national reconstruction efforts that followed the 2nd World War. Over his long lifetime, he made major contributions to Planning, most notably through his involvement in the planning of the post-war New Towns (and later, the Urban Villages movement) and his truly ground-breaking application of cost-benefit analysis principles to the evaluation of the social, economic and environmental considerations that Planning decisions seek to balance (Community Impact Evaluation). Nat served as President of the Royal Town Planning Institute in 1966 and his  outstanding contribution to the Planning profession was recognised formally in 2004 when the RTPI honoured him with its first ever Lifetime Achievement Award.

Sadly, Nat’s long and inspiring life drew to a close in February 2009, but his vision, principles and commitment continue to underpin Lichfield Planning’s approach to work.

Our senior partner, Dalia Lichfield, is continuing to develop and apply methodologies such as Community Impact Evaluation and Dynamic Planning, drawing on and adding to Nat’s innovative work and working with all the partners and staff to ensure that the Lichfield name remains synonymous with good planning.
