Dynamic Planning

Our integrated Dynamic Planning methodology focuses on ongoing development processes in an urban area. It assists Stakeholders to understated , the interactions of economic, social, physical and other factors in these processes, and the roles of active and recipient stakeholders in these interactions. A structured involvement of these stakeholders enables better understanding of the incentives and impediments to change as well as the desired and side effects of change.

This assists the development of a realistic strategy in which stakeholders’ capacity and responses have been taken into account. It is inherently an integrated approach to planning, as it brings out the interactions between economic, social, environmental and , organisational factors. It is also centred on realistic delivery, due to its focus on processes of change and engagement with stakeholders who play a role in that process.

Community Impact Analysis

This method assists planners and decision makers to compare the distribution of beneficial and adverse impacts of proposed interventions – whether policies or physical development – in an existing urban or regional situation.  Analysing the ‘ripple effects’ of a proposed intervention the method identifies the different groups of people who are likely to experience the impacts of these effects.  The analysis reveals not only the achievement of pre-set desirable objectives, but also the various side effects likely to result from the main line of action – some beneficial and some undesirable side effects.

Key to it is that the whole range of impacts are seen in terms of who gains and who loses – an important consideration for decision makers.

This analysis forms a benchmark against which the ongoing monitoring of the project and its intermediate evaluation can be set, with lessons learned for adjustment of the project and more generally for future planning and evaluation. Community Impact Analysis was devised by Prof Nathaniel Lichfield and applied to several dozen projects. It has been written up in several books and many articles , and won RTPI Awards.
